Bruce Holsinger

Bruce Holsinger is a novelist and literary scholar based in Charlottesville. His new novel, The Gifted School (Riverhead), was a Book of the Month Club Main Selection as well as Lifetime TV's Book of the Month for October. The New York Times calls The Gifted School “a suspenseful, laugh-out-loud page-turner and an incisive inspection of privilege, race and class,” while The Wall Street Journal dubbed it “the novel that predicted the College Admissions Scandal.” The Gifted School has already appeared on a number of Best of 2019 lists and is currently in development for a multi-season series by Universal Television. His previous novels, A Burnable Book (2014) and The Invention of Fire (2015), are set in medieval Europe, the subject of his academic work as Linden Kent Memorial Professor of English at the University of Virginia, where he also serves as editor-in-chief of the journal New Literary History. His essays and reviews have appeared in The New York TimesThe New York Review of BooksVanity FairThe Washington PostSlate, and many other publications, and he appears regularly on NPR. His many nonfiction books have won major awards from the NEH, the ACLS, and the Modern Language Association, and he is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship.
