Two writers turn to the stars as they tackle Space-Age narratives with a speculative twist. In First Cosmic Velocity, Zach Powers brings a conspiracy theory to life with the story of a set of twins who become involved in the Soviet space program, which can’t seem to figure out how to bring down the cosmonauts they sent into space. One twin is supposedly launched to his death, while the other is stuck pretending he is the one who returned. Erika Swyler’s Light From Other Stars tells the story of a girl who dreams of becoming an astronaut and whose father builds a machine to control time in order to make his dream of prolonging his daughter’s life a reality. When the time warping machine is set off by the explosion of the Challenger, Nedda must go through time and space to save her father.
