Two authors explore the driving force behind all narratives—conflict—in their own short story collections. Jacob M. Appel’s Amazing Things Are Happening Here examines our modern world through the eyes of a variety of characters faced with difficult choices including a student with a crush on a dying girl and a mother whale who must save her offspring. Caroline Bock’s Carry Her Home follows one family from the 1960s to the present day in a collection of forty-seven stories, detailing their conflicts, their separations, their hopes, and their returns to each other.
